Ford trademarks new moniker

Ford may no longer be calling its 'baby Bronco' the Maverick or Timberline that was rumored earlier. A new trademark filling from the company suggests that the compact variant of their SUV may be named the Puma. Many North Americans may not realize that Ford previously built a 'sporty' coupe that wore this name back in the late 90's. https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1120041_ford-trademarks-puma-name-potentially-for-baby-bronco

The Puma is one of the most odd looking cars that Ford ever produced, but I know it actually delivered decent a decent driving experience. To be honest I dont think the nameplate of the smaller Bronco will make all that much difference in terms of the sales that it sees. It's probably also cheaper for Ford to reuse something they've previously trademarked.

If Ford had plans to bring out a coupe styled SUV like the CH-R or HR-V, Puma would a great name but it just can't be on anything that takes after the Bronco's styling.

Odds are that this is just cost cutting, as Nesbitt mentioned its cheaper to reuse something they've already paid for. Don't mind the name, but I'm still more interested in the full size version.

I just hate when it results in them butchering names. Also being a Mopar guy, I hated when Dodge revived the Dart name and gave us a product far from the original:

This has become all to common in the industry, especially with the rise of new crossovers. Companies like Mitsubishi, Chevy and even Ford are heavily relying on the legacy of classic nameplates to bring interest to their new models.

To me its a dying practice that holds little value as the years go on and the demographics change, eventually people just care for what's a good solution currently and nothing more.

We know that Ford is looking to revise like 75% of their fleet in the next few years, and that includes the introduction of many brand new models. Odds are a lot of them are just going to be car based crossovers though

If the new Bronco ends up being some sleek looking crossover garbage like Chevy did with the (awful looking) new Blazer, I’m going to be so mad. I want something that can at least be a trail rider mostly stock and built into an off roader if desired. Something to rival the Jeep Wrangler.
