A Wild 2019 Ford Ranger Has Been Spotted In Action

Perhaps The Fast Lane Truck was specifically looking for the 2019 Ford Ranger mule or they were just lucky to come across it testing on the freeway, but they did manage to capture a short clip of it before the engineers pulled back.

Originally mistaken for a Toyota, TFLTruck then realized the prototype was a Ranger. Probably recognizable because the design is still similar to the older models, meaning it won’t be a “true next-generation design.” That’s fine so long as the powertrain sitting on Ford’s body-on-frame platform, known internally as the T6, is able to compete against its rivals.

MotorAuthority may not know what specific powertrains Ford will offer with the 2019 Ranger, they do have some speculation. Maybe the mid-size pickup truck will be powered by a 2.2-liter inline-4 diesel engine delivering 158 horsepower and 284 pound-feet of torque. Or maybe we’ll see a 3.2-liter inline-5 diesel unit capable of cranking out 197 hp and 346 lb-ft of torque. Those in the States can expect to see petrol offerings as well.

We’re expecting a reveal at the next North American International Auto Show in Detroit and maybe it’ll sport the same set of aggressive wheels as the prototype.

Wasn't the Bronco going to share a platform with the Ranger? This doesn't really show us much as the body is going to be completely different from the production Bronco and even the dimensions will change.

All we can get from this is what performance is like since that should be very common between the two models. Design is a given although no on knows what the Bronco will look like. So for all we know it could also share design.

Think they'll share similar powertrains? If it's good enough for a large pickup, it's good enough for something like the bronco.

So far it seems the Yuntu that will be sold in China is the closet thing to a Bronco and although this is a test mule, already it seems to be sharing some design elements with the Ranger seen here. Platform should be the same as the Ranger but so far there's no confirmation.

The Ford Ranger has been revealed already and with the Bronco sharing a platform, it could end up having similar dimensions including ride height.

I have noticed that SUV versions of trucks that ride on the same platform often sit on a bit lower, so that being the case we should see it happen here with the Bronco. Plus don't forget the Bronco will need a sportier profile compared to a more utilitarian position which the Ranger fills.

Perhaps a slightly shorter wheelbase and more curve in the roof line. Wouldn't mind seeing the 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine in the bronco as well since Ford managed to strike a balance between it and a 10-speed auto transmission.

Part of that should depend on what this platform was built for because these days car makers create platforms that can be used for a wide range of applications. For all we know this could be used in both 2 door and 4 door applications. All I seen them offer overseas is a 4 door and this platform is apparently that overseas platform.
