2020 Ford Bronco Gets Aluminum

autoevolution said the new Ford Bronco will be getting more aluminum than ever before in its underpinning construction. No idea which section of the frame will be using aluminum, but at least we know it'll be lighter because of it.

Ford is definitely all over this aluminum thing so I wouldn't be surprised if aluminum is heavily used in this Bronco. Door skins, floor pans probably. I'm sure there will be more.

Aluminum will probably be used on the body more than the frame like the engine hood, bumper and the doors. I'd still feel safer with a steel frame and support pillars.

I don't think they can use aluminum as a frame. Not strong enough.. the only frame materials I've seen are steel. In the world of racing you'll see chromoly or something but that's super strong as well and lightweight, just really expensive.

Not the entire frame, 100% of it can't be made out of that but what they will have to do is reinforce certain areas with stronger metals or construct metals in a way that can take on the impact. It's like how the inside of some structures have little triangles in them, those are strong, they take the impact.

Long way to go before we get to see anything but hopefullly when the time comes we see a half cut in person.

The Audi A8 has an all aluminum frame. The Corvette C6 Z06 has an aluminum frame as well. The only key thing to worry about is separating the steel components from the aluminum frame because it causes a real corrosive reaction to the aluminum. when they come in contact. Aluminum, depending on grades and what not when you get real technical, can be stronger than steel and it's substantially lighter.

I don't think ford will use the highest grade aluminum since they still have to keep production costs down and make the final Bronco affordable. Maybe the frame will be steel and the other panels are aluminum? Seems like a good way to separate the materials.

We can probably take a look at what ford is doing with their pickups for an idea of where they'll be using aluminum. Most of it is on the exterior and truck bed. with the weight savings, Ford can add more features to the Bronco without compromising fuel economy.

It's most likely going to be the route they take. Steel frame, aluminum panels. Shave costs and weight down, not as much as they could, but as much as they can to keep it MSRP friendly. The whole trunk bed is made of aluminum now right? They could probably make the doors, hood, trunk gate and possibly floor pans out of aluminum ?

Yup, the truck bed is all aluminum. I can definitely see them using aluminum for the floor, that's a huge surface area and could weight a lot more if it was made with something like steel.
